Frequently asked questions
At Compass Pools Christchurch, we know that building a swimming pool is a big decision. From choosing the perfect spot to understanding your reasons for wanting a pool, we’re here to ensure you have all the facts before taking the plunge.
Before you install a pool
Building a swimming pool is a significant investment, and there are a few key factors to consider:
- Shape/Size: The space on your property will determine your pool’s size and shape.
- Colour: Think about the pool’s surroundings, the style of your house, and how the colour will look under different lighting conditions.
- Location: Sunlight exposure, wind direction, and privacy are crucial when choosing your pool’s spot.
- Price: Your budget will influence the materials, size, features, and type of pool you can afford.
Reflect on the pool’s purpose. Will it be for exercise, relaxation, or family fun? This will help you choose the right shape and features, ensuring you get the most out of your pool.
Your property’s size and location will determine your pool’s dimensions and placement. Consider any existing services and potential excavation challenges. At Compass Pools Christchurch, we are experienced in installing pools in various ground conditions. You might need a Geotech Report or Soil Tests to assess these conditions.
In New Zealand, a building consent is required for pool installation. If using boundary fencing as a pool barrier, you must meet local Council requirements. By law, pools deeper than 400 mm must have a barrier to prevent unsupervised access by children under five.
How much do swimming pools cost?
Every pool project is unique, with various options, site differences, and personal preferences affecting the overall cost. When you inquire about a Compass Pool, our team will visit your site to discuss your vision and assess any challenges, providing a more accurate cost estimate.
The cost of your pool will depend on:
- Access to your pool site
- Soil condition
- Pool size
- Customization to suit your lifestyle
- Additional features like water or lighting elements
Maintaining your pool involves:
- Running and servicing pumps and filters
- Costs of chemicals or saltwater chlorinators
- Cleaning methods (self-cleaning, robot cleaners, suction cleaners)
- Aesthetic upkeep
- Heating and additional features
Constructing your pool
From signing the quote to installation, it typically takes around 6-8 months, including shipping from Australia. On-site installation, from excavation to completion (up to the concrete bond beam), takes 5-10 working days.
Consider installing the pool first if house construction will limit access. This is called a sleeper pool. If access will remain after house construction, consult your builder to ensure proper footings for future excavation.

Swimming pool care
Pool maintenance is crucial for a clean and healthy pool. The Vantage self-cleaning system keeps your pool pristine with minimal effort, reducing chemical consumption, heating costs, and the need for cleaning equipment.
The Vantage circulation and self-cleaning system ensures your pool water remains fresh and healthy by constantly moving and filtering the water. This system reduces chemical usage, maintains even water temperature, and keeps your pool clean without manual vacuuming.
Salt chlorination offers a gentler, safer, and more cost-effective pool sanitation method, producing softer-feeling water with lower maintenance requirements compared to traditional chlorine pools.
- Monitor Chemical Levels: Test your pool water weekly during swimming season.
- Check Water Levels: Keep water levels halfway up the skimmer’s opening.
- Backwash Your Filter: Regularly clean your filter system.
- Empty Skimmer and Vantage Baskets: Regularly empty the baskets to keep your filter working efficiently.
- Choose a Self-Cleaning System: The Vantage System keeps your pool clean with minimal effort.
- Schedule Annual Service Appointments: Have a professional check your pool’s mechanical equipment yearly.
